Small Science


I love bees. This semester I’m taking a course called “Forest and Shade Tree Entomology” which has nothing to do with bees, but we are making an insect collection and therefor I am entitled to a few little fuzzy hymenoptera in my collection. I took these photos with my cell phone and a microscope. This way I can see the little hairs, ocelli (3 eyes on top of the head), wing veins, and other details. I find it a bit eerie to see a photograph through the lens of a microscope, it’s almost like looking into another world. Pictured above is an unidentified bee, and below is a halictid bee, bumblebee, and honey bee. Enjoy!
